The verb "GUSTAR" (to like) is the verb of reference to express likes in Spanish, then follows "ENCANTAR" (to love), both are conjugated in the same way. Both the verb gustar and encantar in Spanish, being verbs referring to the object, are conjugated according to the object to which they refer. Most of the time we use them in the third person singular or plural, since we are almost always talking about what we like and what we don't like. They are used in the singular when referring to an object in the singular and in the plural when referring to objects in the plural.

    e.g.

  • A mí me gusta el pan dulce. (I like sweet bread.)
  • A mí no me gustan las peras. (I don't like pears.)
  • A Lucas le encantan las papas fritas. (Lucas loves French fries.)
  • A mi papá le gusta leer el periódico. (My dad likes to read the newspaper.)
  • ¿Te gustan las novelas? (Do you like soap operas?)
  • ¿Qué te gusta más, la pizza o las hamburguesas? (What do you like more, pizza or hamburgers?)

NOTES:

1. _When gustar and encantar refers to an infinitive verb, the singular form is used.

    e.g.

  • A mi padre le gusta caminar por las mañanas. (My father likes walking in the morning.)
  • A los niños les gusta comer chocolates. (Children like to eat chocolates.)
  • A mi hermana le encanta mirar películas de miedo. (My sister loves to watch scary movies.)

2._The verb ODIAR (to hate) is conjugated in a normal way, like all verbs (yo odio, tú odias, él/ella odia, nosotros odiamos, vosotros odiáis, ustedes odian, ellos/ellas odian)

    e.g.

  • Yo odio la comida fría.(I hate cold food.)
  • Ellos odian comer en la calle.(They hate eating on the street.)
