Llamarse (to be named)

You can literally translate the phrase "My name is" from English to Spanish as "Mi nombre es", but the most common form is "Yo me llamo". When you say "Mi nombre es" you´re saying the name that your parents gave you when you were born, and it is used to give the full name. When you say "Yo me llamo" you´re saying how you want people to say you as a name.

You can conjugate the verb "LLAMARSE" in the following way. In this case we only need the singular form.

  • Yo me llamo (My name is)
  • Tú te llamas (Your name is)
  • Usted se llama (Your name is)
  • Él/Ella se llama (His/Her name is)

    Ejemplos (e.g.):

  1. Yo me llamo (Put your name here)
  2. Mi hermana se llama Claudia.
  3. Él se llama Pedro.
  4. ¿Cómo te llamas?
  5. ¿Cómo se llama usted? (formal form)
  6. El perro se llama Tarzán.

Notice that the verb we use to say our name uses additional pronouns, they are called reflexive pronouns. If you use the verb without these pronouns it has another meaning.
